The old Dunlop factory

The former Dunlop tyre production site is in the centre of the city of Tournai, Belgium. The 1.4 ha site, acquired in October 2012, is 850 meters from the Scheldt River, close to the historic heart of the city and a short walk from Tournai railway station.

The site's contamination consists mainly of hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents. Ginkgo's approach involved demolishing the concrete slabs covering the entire site and excavating the hydrocarbon-contaminated hot spots. 15,000 tonnes of soil were valorised in a biological and physico-chemical treatment centre.

The redevelopment plan developed by Syntaxe Architectes consists of a residential complex of around 20,900 sqm, mainly comprising 18,000 sqm of open market housing, but also 2,100 sqm of offices and 800 sqm of commercial space.
