In December 2022, Ginkgo acquired its first brownfield site in Italy. Located in the Porta al Prato district of Florence, just 15 minutes from the city centre, the former "Officine Grandi Riparazioni" train depot and repair workshop covers an area of 8 hectares. Ideally located near the new Maggio Musicale Fiorentino opera house and the Stazione Leopolda exhibition centre, the site is set between a residential area and the Cascine park, Florence's largest public park.
Heavily contaminated, industrial waste must be removed, and demolition work will also be required. The urban regeneration project will enable the plot to be de-prioritised and new public spaces and green areas to be created, while preserving the identity of the site and a number of remarkable buildings.
The planned redevelopment proposes a building area of around 51,000 sim, which will include residential property including upmarket residences, a hotel and shops. As part of the NCFF, which aims to increase the biodiversity and climate resilience of the project through nature-based solutions, the project is benefiting from technical assistance.
